Appearance alone can affect whether a webpage is perceived as having good or bad design and how your company is portrayed. Your web page presents the first impression of your company. Good or bad web design can be recognized within seconds of viewing a webpage.
Many designers are fixated with showing off their skills and the many resources available to build a site. The CORRECT use of features, colors, designs, etc. will impress clients and colleagues [and lets not forget the people using the site].
An OVERUSE of features, colours, designs, etc. will still impress some clients and colleagues but the end user [your clients] will get confused sometimes lost and move on to a competitor with a better designed site.
Good website design is user friendly and helps the user to quickly assess the content and easily find answers to questions and information that they are looking for.
Focus on your companies and therefore the sites objectives. Question why you have items on a page if you can’t explain why then it probably doesn’t need to be there.
Bad website design is NOT user friendly, it does not have a clear objective and often the site is cluttered and confusing which makes the content difficult to interpret. Pages that are too slow to load [maybe because of flash animation] or graphics that will not load and links which do not work are all items that can contribute to a badly designed site.
The major reason for a site being badly designed is because the author/writer/designer has forgotten the purpose and intention of the site and has not put themselves in the role of user.
